In 1982, at the age of 30, Alan Wheat ran for and was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He made history by becoming the youngest African American ever to serve in Congress. His election heralded a new era of politics with African Americans being elected from multicultural and majority white districts.
He quickly became part of the House leadership by being appointed to the powerful Rules Committee. His work on the Rules Committee allowed him to impact major legislation and develop an extensive and bipartisan network of contacts in Washington.
The Wall Street Journal soon hailed Congressman Wheat as a "political star" and Time Magazine pointed to him as a "bright and able leader for the new generation of African American elected officials."
Congressman Wheat voluntarily left the House in 1994 to run for a seat in the United States Senate. He won the primary to become the first minority candidate selected as a major party nominee for statewide office in Missouri. He did not win the general election but has continued his career in the public arena.
He has worked as a VP of government relations for CARE, the international aid organization, served as President Clinton’s Deputy Campaign Manager and founded Wheat Government Relations. He is currently the Chairman of Wheat Shroyer Government Relations which focuses on providing support to public service clients. He and his team of public policy experts use their extensive knowledge of the legislative process to help deliver results for AANA and other organizations seeking to maximize their voice on Capitol Hill.
